Summary + Thesis Draft 1

Research Topic: "Exploring function and features about Revit in Construction Industry"

Research Questions:

1. why did we choose Autodesk Revit?

2. how and where can we get information about the technology?

3. what are the functions and features about Revit?

The reason for choosing Revit as our research tool is that it is widely used in the construction and architecture industry for its ability to create realistic 3D visualizations and unite multiple datasets and file types, making it a versatile tool. Research prompt: “what are the key features and functions in Autodesk Revit software” on Copilot and Google

Autodesk Revit is a software for Building Information Modeling (BIM) that allows architects, engineers, and construction professionals to plan, design, and manage building projects (Autodesk Revit, 2025). According to the same website, it provides features such as Parametric Modeling, Multidisciplinary Collaboration, 3D Visualization, Automatic Documentation, and vice versa. The software models are intelligent and interconnected where changes automatically update throughout the project. It brings in architecture, structure and Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing (MEP) design into one platform to perform a collaboration. Revit enables streamlined workflow, improves design accuracy, real-time updates and supports construction planning. The use of Autodesk Revit improves efficiency of a project and brings collaboration to multiple teams. It also effectively delivers dynamic and visually rich design walkthroughs, ensuring clear communication and effective project delivery (Autodesk Revit, 2025). Despite its popularity, Revit's complex learning path and high licensing costs limit its accessibility to smaller architectural firms.

Personal Problem Reflection Exercise

(Name)

Kho Peck Shien

Ideal

Stay consistently on track with classwork and avoid falling behind

Reality(gap)

Often feel too tired after classes and work, leading to unproductive evenings

Causes/Conditions

Procrastination during free time, Part-time work on weekends, leaving little energy for studies

Results

Struggled to keep up with tutorials and felt increasingly behind schedule

Goal

Dedicate some time each day to completing assessments or homework, even after work and classes

Possible change

Adopt a habit of completing tasks incrementally to stay on track with deadlines and classwork

Testing the hypothesis

I committed to working on homework and tutorials after work and lessons, regardless of tiredness

Outcome of change

I was able to stay on schedule and keep up with class requirements

Introductory Letter

Dear Prof Brad Blackstone,

I am writing to introduce myself to you. My name is Peck Shien, and I am a Year 1 Civil Engineering student at Singapore Institute of Technology. I graduated from Singapore Polytechnic in 2023 with a diploma in civil engineering, which provided me with a solid foundation for my degree. I am particularly interested in facade engineering, where precise measurements and structural safety are critical. This field allows me to focus on technical accuracy and ensure building facades are durable and compliant with safety standards. Beyond academics, I enjoy cooking and baking, which has taught me to be proactive and detail-oriented. When I come across a new recipe or dessert, I act on it immediately, honing my ability to adapt quickly, manage resources efficiently, and maintain precision. These habits align with the process-driven mindset required in engineering, where accuracy and careful execution are essential.

One of my strengths is my ability to listen actively and reflect on different viewpoints, which helps me think critically and approach problems thoughtfully. However, I sometimes struggle to express my thoughts clearly, especially in discussions, which can make effective communication challenging.

Through this module, I aim to to improve my ability to articulate ideas more clearly and confidently. I hope to develop communication skills that help me express myself effectively in both academic and professional settings.

Thank you for taking the time to read this email. I look forward to learning and improving throughout this module.

Yours Sincerely,

Kho Peck Shien Read Eliz, Sandra, Khad's letter

“Employers identify communication as one of the basic competencies every graduate should have, asserting that the ability to communicate is valuable for obtaining employment maintaining successful job performance.”

Sherwyn Morreale, Michael Osborn & Judy Pearson, Professors of Communication (2000)

This quote by Sherwyn Morreale, Michael Osborn & Judy Pearson just proves the great importance of communication in workplace. There is a growing consensus among employers that success is driven by strong communication skills. Having strong communication skills is critical to day-to-day job performance and career development in the future as well, instead of just for the sole purpose of helping individuals to land a job. Communication is the bridge between individuals, teams, and organizational goals. Without effective communication, even the most gifted employees can struggle to perform their roles or contribute meaningfully to company’s objectives.

In real-life applications, what makes teamwork is communication between individuals. Teams are comprised of individuals with diverse skills, opinions, and work styles. For a team to function cohesively, each member must be able to express ideas, ask questions, clarify misunderstandings, and give feedback. Without clear communication, these efforts may become fragmented, causing confusion, delays, and reduced productivity. For example, in a project team, if one member doesn’t communicate a delay in their task, the entire team might fall behind. Similarly, if team members do not clearly express their ideas or actively listen to one another, the team’s output would be disjointed and ineffective.

In essence, effective communication ensures that all team members are aligned, resources are used efficiently, and goals are pursued cohesively. It also promotes a positive, collaborative work environment, where everyone feels heard and valued. Strong communication skills, therefore, not only help individuals perform better but also enable the team to succeed as a whole.
